Two best friends re-purposed a Norwegian survival lifeboat, into a self sufficient expedition home to sail from UK to the Norwegian Arctic in for the adventure of a lifetime.

Built in 1997 in Norway,Stødig (meaning sound and steadfast) spent her previous life as 100 man Lifeboat serving the Western Isles of Scotland aboard the CalMac ferry, MV Clansman. She was a robust, unsinkable and spacious blank canvas for the experienced architects to work with.

"Stødig exemplifies a lot of things I am passionate about: adventure, self sufficiency, sustainability and a dogged determination to explore remote places in new ways."

Guylee Simmonds and David Schnabel bought a marine survival lifeboat in February 2018 and after a year long conversion left on four month voyage to the Arctic. Along with Shackleton, Guylee's dog, they travelled from the UK to Tromsø, far north in the Norwegian Fjords. Situated at 70onorth, Tromsø is the largest city in the Arctic and having arrived, the lifeboat and crew are spending the winter there, and exploring their surroundings. 

The aim of the expedition is to explore this wild and isolated landscape, demonstrate the ability of design innovation to facilitate self sufficiency in such extreme environments and to document and share the adventure through photography and film.

They have documented the build process and first expedition thanks to David's passion in landscape and adventure photography, he is recording every stage of the project. They are also lucky enough to have filmmakers COPA and Febril, notably Jonny Campbell making a feature film of the conversion.

Repurposed Lifeboat turned into Adventure Home

Serene, chic, and decidedly modern, the yurt that Zach Both and Nicole Lopez now call home in Portland, Oregon, was build in under six months costing around $63,000.

Home is where love resides, where memories are created, and family feels welcome, or however the saying goes. Be it all those cheesy things or not, every person needs a home. Some inherit it, others buy it, and then there are those who build it with their own hands. Zach Both and Nicole Lopez are the kinds of people who shaped their own beautiful house with the help of friends and family.

“For the past year, Nicole and I have been building a modern yurt 20 minutes outside of Portland,”

The yurt measures in at 30 feet in diameter and  a spacious 730 square feet of living space. The exterior structure was constructed in a weekend with help from friends and family, while the interior build out took a couple of months. Inspired by his experiences, the could documented their Yurt set up on their own website that provides step-by-step instructions and photos of the entire build process.

The cost of materials for the interior—from building supplies to furniture and appliances—would come out to just over $25,000, bringing the total value of our yurt to $63,000. While not a trivial amount of money, the greatest cost would actually be the time involved. For the better part of six months, constructing a yurt of this scale and caliber became a full-time job with overtime. 

Any sense of normalcy fell by the wayside. Nicole and I worked tirelessly towards the moment when we could step back and marvel at what we had built together. Once the paint dried and the sawdust cleared, we moved in and have enjoyed the revolving door of friends and family experiencing the space we created.

Tiny dwelling meets luxury in these Bauhaus-inspired fireproof container homes.

In the wake of the 2018 Woolsey fire that ravaged southern California, Malibu duo Doug Burdge and Nate Garnero sought to provide temporary housing to their clients, transforming containers into small fire-resistant houses. Building on Garnero's six years of cargo-reading experience and Burdge's design expertise, the duo recently launched the Buhaus: a pre-licensed tiny container house built for life. indoor / outdoor.

"People appreciate great design, and most shipping container designs seem to be more low-end, We wanted to create a higher-end shipping container living unit."

Buhaus - a combination of the words Bauhaus and Malibu - alludes to the 20th century movement thanks to its clean, geometric form and focus on functionality. The 160 sq. Ft. Buhaus studio is effectively split into three areas: a living / sleeping area with kitchenette, bathroom, and outdoor terrace.

Custom built-ins, space-saving devices, and a constant connection with the outside area help make the minimalist apartment feel much larger than the size suggests. The base unit will be available at a flat rate of $ 96,000 (excluding location costs) and can be further customized with a selection of finishes and hardware options.

"This unit is unique because it is off-grid capable. It has all the hookups necessary for alternative energy."

25 years ago, August Hausman father received a Airstream Land Yacht for his 40th birthday which has now been revived & refurbished with a  beautiful modern and minimalistic touch.

A musician as well as an interior designer in his own right, August saw an opportunity. "I thought it was a gem and I don’t think my dad had a plan to do anything with it, so I asked him if I could take it off his hands.". His plans started with making this an Airbnb rental but after deciding to move from LA back to his roots in Ojai his plans changed and he decided to make this his full time tiny home.

It was, however, a project before it became a home. August had planned early on to do it himself because the trailer required a lot of work. He started by stripping the interior down to the studs and subfloor then hauled the trailer from the lot where it had been sitting abandoned for a decade to a friend's tiny-home shop in Ventura, California, to borrow some equipment when it was down to the bare bones.

"I wanted it to feel like an old airstream, just with a refreshed new face. So I decided to start with white and have only one wood tone, walnut"

August, who has been living in the "Airstream Haus" for over a year, says that although it's difficult to live in such a small space, it's worth it at the end of the day with s a distinctly modern, almost minimalist look, but the spare design keeps a small space from feeling cramped.

"You realize what things you need and what things you really don’t. The things that you do use, you want them to be special."

Since August's Land Yacht is only 23 feet long, there is no separate bedroom. Instead, a queen-size bed in the main living area hides storage underneath, and can be configured as a couch or a daybed. In the bathroom, the original hulking fiberglass combination washbasin and shower was replaced by a composting toilet and an open shower.

1968 Airstream becomes a modern minimalist space

Meet the ÖÖD House, a small but dynamic cabin built for multiple purposes.

Whether you want a cabin, an Airbnb retreat or workspace, this  ÖÖD House has you covered. Created by Estonian brothers Andreas and Jaak Tiik originally as a hotel, they have now given the unit more purpose and are soon offering it for sale on Amazon.

The idea of the ÖÖD house was born when the brothers were planning a weekend of hiking. They were looking for a small house in a beautiful spot where they could spend the night. However, all they could find were log houses for larger groups of people or small houses of mediocre quality. 

They were far from the ideal house the brothers were looking for and did not meet their expectations or the goal of the holiday. This experience gave them the idea to create a ÖÖD hotel concept with a stylish and bold design, consisting of hotel rooms and auxiliary buildings such as reception, restaurant, conference rooms, spa, gym, etc.

We designed the ÖÖD Home Office to take its character from the environment in which it’s located. Neighbors also love it, as it really melts into the environment. Plus, the glass facade allows you to keep an eye on children while you’re working.

The result is a simple 113-square-foot prefab that expands the company’s popular Mirror Glass collection to five different models. 

The framing is steel and it’s clad on three sides with full-height Mirastar insulated glazing units, while the rear wall is clad in timber that supports various functions inside, and will be for sale starting from around $22k

Meet Nolla, the small but cozy, fully off-grid & sustainably built cabin, tucked away on a remove island in Finland.

Nolla, meaning 'Zero' in Finish is the name given to this zero waste cabin which was build from locally sourced pine & required absolutely no heavy machinery, keeping its carbon foot print as minimal as possible.

Hidden away on Vallisaari island near Helsinki, the tiny cabin has to be access by boat and is available for guests to stay at a very affordable rate and all profits from guests are donated to The Ocean Cleanup.

Created Finnish by Robin Falck for renewable energy company Neste originally as party of their 'Journey to Zero' concept which is to explore carbon neutral ways of living. 

The two main goals for Robin with the Nolla was the build a small living space with minimal CO2 emissions along with experimenting on ways to live a more minimal less wasteful lifestyle in harmony with nature.

The total space of the cabin totals in at 9m2 which is essentially a small bedroom with a small cooking area. Focusing mainly on the outdoors its usually all guests will need.  

There is a small solar panel on the side which allows you to charge a mobile phone or use basic electrical appliances and a huge open triangular window giving you a breath taking view.

Others features include the ability for the cabin to be both assembled and taken down and moved around with ease, and the Wallas stove, reserved for cooking and heating, runs entirely on "Neste MY Renewable Diesel™", made 100% from waste and residue.
